The Pitch Always Comes Before The Hit

# Is your song actually good enough?

You get one honest answer from someone who has spent 30 years in the music business, the last 20 of them in the Nashville rooms where these decisions get made. If your song is ready, I pitch it to publishers, labels, artists, and music supervisors. If it is not ready yet, I tell you exactly why and what to fix.

> "Hey Keith, just wanted to thank you for all the help you have been to me. I have learned so much from you; you gave me an education I could not have gotten anywhere else, especially being a completely inexperienced songwriter. Also, thank you for connecting me onto Corey. He is a great guy and has already sold one of our songs to a movie which is so thrilling!"

## How do you know if your song is any good?

Your friends will not tell you the truth. Your family definitely will not. Contests and playlists do not either. A pass is silence, and silence teaches you nothing.

Every song you send gets a real critique against the six things Keith listens for: the title, the intro, the story and lyrics, the melody and top line, the chords and arrangement, and the commercial value.

It comes to you in writing, so you can sit with it and work through it line by line. Either the song is ready or it is not, and you will know which.

## If it is good, how does it get heard?

A great song sitting on a hard drive earns nothing. This industry still runs on relationships, not submission portals.

So the model here is inverted. Publishers, labels, producers, managers, and music supervisors come to a curated catalog on this site. I approve every one of them before they can listen, so I know exactly who is in there and what they are looking for.

I also see who plays what. If your song is in the catalog and it is getting played, I will tell you when there is something worth telling.

Most of those contacts are country and Christian, because this is Nashville. Real opportunities exist across other genres too.

Who is actually listening

## Keith Mohr

30 plus years in the music business. In Nashville since 2003. He has run a studio, run a label's A&R desk, built one of the first homes online for independent artists, and put songwriters on Nashville stages in front of the people who sign them. When you pay for a review, this is the ear you are paying for.

### Nashville Rising Song, 2006 to 2020

A songwriter competition on major Nashville stages with industry pros judging every round. Kelsea Ballerini and Gayle both came through it. So did Jason Wyatt of The Lost Trailers.

### Global Rising Song, launched 2020

The first crowdfunding songwriter contest anywhere. Fans voted by donating a dollar a vote and the songwriters kept the vote money. Industry pros picked each winner. 22 contests, more than $225,000 raised, and rent paid for writers around the world when live music stopped.

### IndieHeaven

One of the first websites built for independent artists. Served thousands of musicians for over 20 years and was the first site to sell single-song downloads, before Apple and MP3.com.

### Studio and A&R work

Ran a recording studio in Pennsylvania where Halestorm cut some of their earliest songs. Mixed a project for Rick Derringer. Later ran Broken Records, an indie label that combined publishing, promotion, and distribution. That label is no longer operating.

Keith has had songs placed and cut by artists. These are the rooms and the track record behind the opinion you are paying for. They are not a guarantee about your song.

Hi Keith,

Thank you for sending over your song. I appreciate your trust.

My Notes About Your Song

It's a catchy song, I like it. Its funny, well written and a great story! We all know a Cousin Billy!

### Song Assessment

1

### Title

What's Working

- "Too Much Money, Not Enough Sense" is a catchy, conversational title that immediately establishes the narrative tone for this Country song.
- The title phrase has strong thematic clarity and sets clear expectations for a humorous storyline.

What Needs Work

- The title is dialed in. Nothing to fix here!

2

### Intro

What's Working

- The intro runs approximately twelve seconds, landing right in the sweet spot for modern commercial pacing.
- The instrumental opening successfully establishes an upbeat, traditional Country groove before the vocal enters.

What Needs Work

- The Intro is dialed in. Nothing to fix here!

3

### Story and Lyrics

What's Working

- The narrative follows Cousin Billy through a funny, well-written story arc from winning the lottery to losing it all.
- Specific regional imagery like the gator farm in Kentucky and the final tag line add vivid character detail.

What Needs Work

- Some rhyming choices feel forced to fit the meter, such as pairing France with chance and chance with dance.
- The narrative resolution loops back to the beginning a bit too predictably without introducing a deeper emotional payoff.

4

### Melody and Top Line

What's Working

- The vocal melody matches the playful tone of the lyrics and carries the bounce of the arrangement effectively.
- The chorus lifts naturally from the verses, giving the central theme a memorable melodic anchor.

What Needs Work

- Some phrasing in the verses relies on repetitive rhythmic patterns that can blur the storytelling pace.
- There is limited variation in the top line contour, which causes parts of the verses to drag slightly.

5

### Chords and Arrangement

What's Working

- The chord progression utilizes reliable Country building blocks that support the upbeat, hummable nature of the tune.
- The arrangement features classic instrumentation choices that suit the narrative humor well.

What Needs Work

- The underlying chord structure relies on predictableNashville patterns without unexpected harmonic twists.
- Strip the production away, and the underlying structure depends entirely on the novelty of the lyric to maintain interest.

6

### Current or Dated

What's Working

- The upbeat tempo and traditional instrumentation give it an accessible, crowd-pleasing energy.

What Needs Work

- The overall stylistic execution lands squarely in the mid-2000s novelty country pocket, sounding roughly ten to fifteen years behind current mainstream radio norms.
- The lyrical tropes and comedic storytelling style echo older country parody conventions rather than modern commercial trends.

7

### Commercial Value

What's Working

- The humor and relatable character study give it strong potential for niche comedy country playlists or live bar settings.
- Listeners who enjoy lighthearted storytelling songs will find immediate entertainment value here.

What Needs Work

- It lacks the modern lyrical edge and commercial polish required to compete for major cuts in today's competitive Country market.
- Mainstream publishers will likely view the novelty angle as too specific for broad radio consideration.

8

### Final Assessment

What's Working

- The song delivers a genuinely funny narrative with a memorable character and a cohesive storyline.
- The overall concept is fun, well-structured, and entertaining from start to finish.

What Needs Work

- It is not quite pitch-ready in its current form due to dated stylistic conventions and predictable lyrical phrasing.
- The single most important thing to fix first is modernizing the lyrical phrasing and tightening the arrangement to escape dated novelty tropes.
